We were tasked with managing the completion of a 6-month project in Darlington to completely transform a home and make it a more energy-efficient, comfortable place to live. The team needed to pull together with a selection of other contractors to pull off this project. The goal was to complete the following:
- Solar PV installation
- Battery storage (Tesla Powerwall 3)
- Air source heat pump (Vaillant aroTHERM plus)
- Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
- Restructuring the layout upstairs with new walls
- Fitting a new kitchen/bathroom
- Full electrical rewire
- Networking and CCTV
- Underfloor heating and screeding to pair with the heat pump, with replumbing of the heating system needed.
This list alone shows the sheer scale of this project, one that we are proud to now have finished. The team comes from an electrical background, which is the foundation of everything we do, but other aspects of this project would rely on the other businesses we worked with to bring this project to the client’s expectations.
For us, there were three main reasons why this project needed to be done the way it was: comfort, infrastructure, and usability. Each measure we completed on this project was to target one of these areas of improvement, and we like to think that by the end of this project the client could see this too.
The DMH team did a fantastic job of installing the solar PV for the property and the addition of the Powerwall 3 in the garage. This ensures that the client can generate their own solar energy whilst also storing any excess energy to keep or to sell back to the grid. It was important to us that the electrical wiring inside the property was up to standard. For us, if the networking and wiring isn’t where it should be, then the homeowner can’t make the most of their home.
This project was in collaboration with Horner Building and Joinery, responsible for the completion of the new rooms and layout upstairs. All previous walls were ripped out, making way for new walls to be installed. It was important that DMH had access to the frames of these walls before any plasterboard was added. This is so that the team could start adding wiring to the home, resulting in a full electrical rewire of the property.

As mentioned above, the property also had underfloor heating installed, something that the team, in collaboration with Ace Concrete Flooring Solutions, completed. This involved the downstairs flooring being completely ripped up, with new installation, underfloor heating and finished screed being added. Now the property can benefit from a warmer home and underfloor heating activated when they need it.
In the past, DMH Electrical and Renewables have worked alongside Beale Heating Services to ensure that heat pumps are installed with the utmost care. This project was no different. During this project, they helped to install the Vaillant aroTHERM plus at the rear of the property, ensuring that it worked with the replumbing of the heating system.
Something that took us out of our comfort zone and into new territory was the new bathroom and kitchen that were installed. This included new worktops and lighting, with a new shower and Japanese-style toilet in the bathroom upstairs.
This project has tested our team and pushed us out of our normal services. It’s great to have worked alongside other businesses to complete such a large project. We are more than happy with how this project has come together, and we encourage you to check out the different stages of this process through the behind-the-scenes videos we uploaded to our YouTube channel.
