The government has announced that all rental properties must have an EPC rating of C or higher by 2030. Solar PV is one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to increase that rating, and DMH can help landlords across the North East install renewable solutions with our trusted brands.
What is an EPC Rating?
An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) measures how well-insulated and energy-efficient a property is. In the UK, rental properties have been tasked with getting houses with at least a C rating, if not higher. Landlords are faced with much work in the next 5 years, and some properties will need more work done than others. Here’s a list of the EPC ratings and what they mean:
- A or B: Excellent energy efficiency
- C: Average energy efficiency
- D: Below-average energy efficiency
- E: The minimum acceptable standard
- F or G: Poor energy efficiency
What can landlords do?

Landlords can improve their property rating in many ways, one of which is through renewable energy solutions. Many properties rented in the North East haven’t been fitted with Solar PV or proper installation. With various renewable energy solutions, DMH can work with landlords to create custom packages to prepare their property for a Net Zero future by 2030. Some ways of increasing your EPC rating include:
- Upgrade your lighting to LED bulbs
- Insulate your walls and roof
- Install double or triple-glazed windows
- Upgrade your boiler
- Install underfloor heating
- Install a smart meter
How to apply for an EPC
Getting your property an EPC rating isn’t as easy as filling out a form. Firstly, you need to find an accredited assessor. This ensures that you are getting the right measures for your property. The next step is to arrange a property assessment, during which the accredited assessor will visit your property and see what needs to be done. To find an assessor head over to https://www.gov.uk/get-new-energy-certificate where you can start the process.
