UK increases Boiler Upgrade Scheme to £9,000

The UK government has announced changes to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, with an uplift in grant funding for oil and LPG-heated homes of £1,500 in an effort to encourage more homes to make the switch to heat pumps.

Changes to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) was launched in 2022, encouraging home owners to move from older fossil fuel-dependent heating to cleaner, more energy-efficient solutions such as Heat Pumps. The grant was increased to £7,500 in 2023 for air source and ground source heat pumps, and has stayed at that price until earlier this week.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme helps homeowners with oil or LPG heating to switch to heat pumps.

Who is this for?

Whilst this uplift is great news, it is only currently available for homeowners who are looking to switch from their old oil or LPG heating, not for everyone. Other than generating cleaner energy, this new uplift to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme will also help with rising energy prices, with those on oil and LPG being affected by it the most. By switching to a heat pump system, homeowners can get more control over their heating and their bills.

This increase looks to target those in rural and off-grid areas who are seeing the worst of the rising energy prices.

What is the government doing to reach net zero?

In March, the UK government released an article on the gov.uk website announcing that low-income families are to benefit from £50 million across the UK to heat their homes, tackling surging prices. Again, this comes to combat the price of oil heating systems for hot water and more.

Similarly in January the Warmer Homes Plan was announced, bringing £15 Billion of renewable support to low income families including solar PV and Battery Storage.

With more grants becoming available to reduce home energy bills, now is a great time to discuss your options when it comes to starting your renewables journey.
