When is the best time to install Solar Panels?

Solar Panels have been one of the leading systems in the world of renewables since the 1970s, providing homeowners a way to harness the power of the sun to create energy. Since then, they have come a long way with the advancements in technology, becoming more affordable too. Naturally, there are a lot of questions surrounding Solar PV; one of which is: “When is the best time to install Solar PV?”

The Benefits of Solar PV

We’ve talked a lot about our favourite renewables in older articles and videos. Still, Solar Panels are not only reliable but also a game-changer for homeowners who want to embrace a greener lifestyle. But to understand when the best time to embrace it is, you’ll need to understand the benefits. Solar PV takes light energy from the sun’s rays and turns it into electrical energy that we use for our home. This is an excellent way for people to save money on energy bills as they are creating their own electricity at no extra cost after the initial installation. With the addition of battery storage, you can then store this energy or even sell excess energy back to the grid. Read more about how you can increase your savings by combining Solar PV and Battery Storage in our recent blog here.

Getting Solar Panels installed in your home can also increase its overall value, with some studies showing a 14% increase in home sales! They look sleek, save you money, and in some cases can even make you money – it’s an investment that is a no-brainer.

When should you install Solar PV?

It often becomes a debate amongst installers and clients alike about the best time to install Solar PV. Opinions differ on the best time for installation. Some say winter is too early, while others argue summer is too late. In truth, there is no “optimum time” for an install. But we will break down the pros and cons throughout the year. This will give you all the info you need to make an informed decision.

Late winter/ early spring – This time of year is an excellent opportunity to get your Solar PV installed. It gives you good lead time before the summer, when most of your energy will be generated. The weather conditions are also perfect for installers, being milder and leading to smoother installs.

Summer – We mentioned before that this is when your system will be generating the most energy. So, it seems like a no-brainer to get them installed in summer, right? Well, if you’re thinking the same, so is everyone else! The summer period can be the busiest time for renewables companies, which leads to longer wait times.

Wintertime – Considering everything we’ve just discussed, winter may appear to be the weakest option. However, even with the harsher weather conditions and shorter hours of daylight, you also need to consider payback time. Install your system sooner to start earning money and offset the installation cost faster. Having your system installed in the winter gives you great lead time before summer arrives.

Hopefully, this article has answered a few of your questions about the right time to go green with solar energy.
